VJ Edgecombe's status is questionable going into tonight's game against the No. 25 UConn Huskies. He is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, having only played 11 minutes in No. 15 Baylor's last contest against New Orleans. His participation in the matchup will be confirmed before the 6:30 p.m. ET tip-off.
Edgecombe is going through the first year of his collegiate career. The Bahama native came out of Long Island Lutheran High School as a consensus five-star prospect, garnering All-American honors before enrolling at Baylor.
The extent of VJ Edgecombe's injury and his performance this season
Baylor coach Scott Drew provided an update on VJ Edgecombe's injury to CBS Sports reporter Jon Rothstein, holding out hope that the freshman star is available to play.
"Baylor's VJ Edgecombe (hamstring) is "progressing nicely and hopes to be available" for Wednesday's game against UConn at Gampel Pavilion, per Scott Drew," Rothstein said in the tweet.
Seven games into the Bears's season, Edgecombe has been averaging 11 points, 5.4 rebounds, three assists, and 2.1 steals on 36.8 percent shooting from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc. He was a notable bright spot in Baylor's 62-77 loss to No. 3 Tennessee on Nov. 22, where he recorded 20 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals on 8-of-16 shooting overall and 3-of-6 from downtown.
The shooting woes for Edgecombe have been apparent for basketball fans to see, but his ability to play on both sides of the ball has allowed him to remain a key contributor to the team's 5-2 start on the season. The Bears put up 85 points on 46.8 percent shooting from the field and 38.1 percent from the arc while giving up 73 points with shooting splits of 47.4 percent overall and 41 percent from outside the arc.
Five players from Baylor Bears, including Edgecombe, average double-digits in total points scored. Norchad Omier leads the way with 15.9 points and 10.4 rebounds as a double-double machine, Jeremy Roach and Robert Wright III are tied for assists per game with 4.7 each while providing 13.3 points and 11.9 points, respectively, and Jayden Nunn puts up 12.9 points as the best three-point shooter with 22 triples made and counting.
After this game, VJ Edgecombe and No. 15 Baylor will return home to host Abilene Christian at the Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas, on Monday at 8 p.m. ET tip-off.
