Flau'Jae Johnson has established herself as a standout player for LSU women's basketball and a rising star in music. The junior guard, who won a national title with the team in 2023, is averaging 20.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists from 51.3% shooting per game this season. Off the court, Johnson's songs have been making waves, particularly her hit track featuring Lil Wayne, "Came Off the Beast."
However, the LSU star credited her performance at the ESPYs Awards as the most memorable moment of her career, in her "Best of Both Worlds" podcast posted on Instagram on Tuesday.
"My most memorable event I would say the ESPYs, for sure," Johnson said. "I feel like the ESPYs was the moment that kind of like put everything together. Everybody kind of got what we were trying to do. Like, "Damn, that's the girl that plays for LSU.
"I was performing, I had my championship ring on, I was performing a song that me and Lil Wayne did, Lil Wayne sitting in the crowd. Really was able to put on my best show at the ESPYs Awards as a musician and as a basketball player. I feel like that was the perfect stage to do that. It's a defining moment in my career that really got people to listen to my music."
LSU HC Kim Mulkey reveals verdict on Flau'Jae Johnson balancing basketball with music
When it comes to hooping and music, Flau'Jae Johnson has proven that she can do both successfully. The LSU star is enjoying an excellent season, producing stellar performances to lead the No. 6 Tigers to a perfect 16-0 start.
As for her music, Johnson is a fast-rising star, following in her late father Camoflauge's footsteps in the journey to etch her name as one of the best to come from Georgia.
However, many have speculated that the LSU junior's rising success in music may distract her from her basketball career, a concern that Tigers coach Kim Mulkey has dismissed.
"Not by me," Mulkey said firmly during the SEC Women’s Basketball Media Day in October. "That kid's one of the more talented players I've ever coached. I'm amazed at how good she is at both and how much time it takes to be good, not just average.
"She's figured out how to balance everything, but it didn't happen overnight. What she had to learn here was how to pop back up after taking a hit. But her work ethic? It's incredible. I don't know if she ever gets tired."
Johnson and the LSU Tigers will be on the road for the SEC opener against Arkansas on Thursday.
