Mark Pope is preparing for his first season with the Kentucky Wildcats and will be hosting the first live scrimmage for fans in October. The Blue-White Scrimmage is organized by the program's NIL collective, 'Club Blue'. The proceeds from the scrimmage will go towards the NIL funds.
Coach Pope is excited about the event and spoke about it during his interview with KSR Radio on Thursday.
“This is just our regularly scheduled practice," Pope said. "It’s going to be, what’s going to happen is we’re going to ... live scrimmage. In fact, I think it’s going to be the first time the public will be able to see us live scrimmage for a full game where BBN will be able to see that. It’s going to be really exciting."
Mark Pope also spoke about the significance of the event for fans and the Wildcats program.
"This is an opportunity for BBN to roll in there and really, really get to know us, how we do things, why we do things, and how we’re trying to build this," he said.
"It’s going to be the greatest fan experience in terms of cheering these guys on and getting to know them but it’s also going to be, in a sense, and coach’s clinic to get inside and dialed into who we are as a program.”
Mark Pope is ecstatic to lead the Kentucky Wildcats
In April, Mark Pope was named the new Kentucky coach following John Calipari's exit. As he played for the Wildcats from 1994 to 1996, leading them to an NCAA championship in his senior season as the captain, Pope's hiring was seen as a huge milestone by the BBN.
During his interview on KSR Radio, Mark Pope shared his excitement about the role.
“I think it's the greatest job in the world,” Pope said. “You know, the day I forget that is the day that Mitch should move me out of here because this is just incredibly special, and it's the greatest challenge that I'll ever face in my life professionally."
“We're doing something we love and we're doing it at the greatest institution in all of college basketball,” he said. “We're certainly doing it in front of the greatest fan base in all of sports, I think. I do think that."
Mark Pope is most known for his creative offense and fans are curious to see how he will turn over Kentucky's fortunes in the upcoming season.
