Collegiate basketball fans have been eagerly waiting to watch Liam McNeeley, a five star forward, who committed to play for UConn. With several top players leaving the Huskies in the summer, McNeely has been dubbed the next big thing to lead UConn.
Dan Hurley's team is coming off its second national championship, and expectations are sky high as they head into the new season. McNeely, a consensus top-10 player in the 2024 class, is expected to step in and make an immediate impact for the Huskies.
On Thursday, Bleacher Report shared a post on Instagram asking fans about their expectations for Liam McNeeley's freshman campaign.
"Liam McNeeley looks to play a big role for the back-to-back champs. Lemme know what your expectations are for the talented freshman," the post read.
Fans flooded the comments section, expressing high hopes for the future star.
"Yall smell that ... it’s a three peat cooking," one wrote.
"Going to lead his team in scoring & work himself into a draft pick," one fan predicted.
"lottery he prolly average 13-15ppg & 3.5 rebounds," another commented.
Meanwhile, some fans showed their skepticism surrounding McNeely's potential impact.
"I say around 14ppg and around 35% from three ... solid defense. He won’t be a lottery though just outside," one commented.
"My expectations are losing to Cooper Flag in The Championship Game 65-68," one jokingly said.
One fan even compared him with an NBA star.
"He give me young Klay Thompson vibes," the fan wrote.
Dan Hurley is optimistic about Liam McNeeley's future
While there may be some doubt regarding his potential and future among the hoop fans, UConn coach Dan Hurley is hopeful about Liam McNeeley. After completing the summer workouts, Hurley had praise for the Texas native.
"He's wired different, obviously," Hurley said. "You’re talking about a fourth-generation college basketball player, a great basketball family. Any time you deal with that, you're getting a serious individual coming into your program."
"We should have recruited him earlier. We were just being stupid. We should have just recruited him straightaway," he added.
McNeeley averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists at Montverde Academy last season. He was selected as a McDonald's All-American and also won the Jordan Brand Classic this year.
