Louisville's Izela Arenas had her career's highest-scoring game in the Cardinals' 79-71 win versus Colorado last Saturday. The first-year guard logged the third-most minutes for the team with 27, resulting in 11 points on a 50% clip, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The nip-and-tuck victory earns No. 24 Louisville their fifth win of the year for a 5-2 record in the 2024-2025 season. The team now sits amongst the mid-tier teams of the Atlantic Coast division by way of their current three-game win streak.
Coming off the bench, the daughter of NBA legend Gilbert Arenas first got in the game midway into the first period where she immediately got an assist. With Louisville fighting tooth-and-nail against the Buffaloes, Arenas made her first layup at the 1:08 mark. But, it wasn't enough as the Cardinals were down 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.
She continued to impress in the start of the second quarter with a steal and an offensive board. The 18-year old then made a 3-pointer to knot the game up, 18-all. Arenas then followed it up with a lay-in at the 5:24 mark to extend Louisville's lead to three, 24-21. Her contributions were enough to give the team a tight 35-33 edge to end the first half.
Entering the second half, Arenas' sole contribution with her stats was a five-footer at the tail-end of the third quarter. But, the freshman was stable enough on defense to maintain the Cardinals' one-point lead at 56-55, heading into the final frame of play.
In the fourth quarter, Arenas and the rest of the team went on a 16-0 run, coupled with stifling defense that had Colorado's first final period points come with 2:48 remaining.
Arenas was everywhere throughout the run in both offense and defense, dishing out open looks and being a pest on the opposition. Her only points of the layover quarter came from the charity stripe and it would eventually ice the game.
Izela Arenas looking to emulate father's success with him in attendance vs Colorado
Louisville's big win against the Buffaloes was attended by Izela's father, 3-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, and her brother, Alijah, named the fourth-ranked prospect of the Class of 2026 according to On3 Industry Rankings.
In her first year, Izela is averaging 5.7 points, 2.2 caroms, and 1.3 assists. Arenas will have another chance to pump up those numbers in Louisville's next game against the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for the SEC/ACC Challenge.
