Jerry West played three years of college basketball at West Virginia and had a solid collegiate career. He played for the Mountaineers from 1957 until 1960.
West played 93 games at West Virginia. In his first year with the Mountaineers, he played in 28 games, averaging 28.5 minutes per game, while recording 17.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists.
After a solid first season at West Virginia, he improved on it in both his second and third years. He finished his college career averaging 24.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
West played on the freshman team in his first year and led them to a perfect 17-0 record.
West totaled 2,309 points and 1,240 rebounds, while holding 12 all-time records at West Virginia. Some of those records include most points, field goals made and rebounds among others. While he was playing, West Virginia won 81 of 93 games.
West's jersey No. 44 was retired by West Virginia on Nov. 26, 2005.
After his college career, West was selected second overall in the 1960 NBA draft.
Jerry West passes away at age 86
It was announced on Wednesday that NBA legend Jerry West passed away at age 86.
"Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86. His wife, Karen, was by his side," the Clippers statement read.
West is one of the top basketball players of all time, as his silhouette is alleged to be the basis of the NBA logo. He was an All-Star every year in his NBA career and was the third player to reach 25,000 points. He won one title in his career as a player.
Following his playing career, West became an executive in the NBA for the LA Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors and LA Clippers.
West won eight NBA titles as an executive and was named Executive of the Year twice in 1995 and 2004.
