John Calipari has had a decent start to his tenure as head coach of Arkansas men's basketball program. Prior to the beginning of the 2024-25 season, the Razorbacks ranked second in the AP's Top 25 after assembling a strong signing class which was the second-best in the nation per On3.
While the Razorbacks have won 10 of the 12 games they have played so far, they are 1-1 against ranked opponents. They received heavy criticism after suffering upset defeats to former No. 8 Baylor on Nov. 16 and Illinois on Nov. 28, but they bounced back by scoring their first ranked win on December 10 against Michigan, with the final score reading 89-87.
The Razorbacks are midway through a nine-day break in their schedule, using the time to celebrate Christmas with their families. Amid the break, Calipari urged his side to come back stronger with an intense conference schedule on the horizon.
Per On3, Calipari said, "Like I told them, you want to win the game and go for Christmas, breathe for the first time, and then come back here absolutely jacked and juiced – let’s go. Let’s get ready for the grind that’s ahead of us."
John Calipari and Arkansas to embark on intense conference schedule from Jan. 4
The SEC is arguably one of the most stacked conferences in men's college basketball today. It will serve as a true test for John Calipari's side, who are chasing their first national championship since Arkansas legend Nolan Richardson led them to the crown jewel of college basketball in 1994.
Following their game against Oakland on Dec. 30, Arkansas will begin the first of an 18-match stretch of games against conference opponents on Jan. 4, when they face Tennessee, who currently sit pretty at the top of AP Top 25 weekly poll.
John Calipari also spoke about the uncertainty that lies ahead in terms of their conference schedule during the break, given the stiff competition that each opponent can give his side.
"It’s, look, you know – none of us and no one in the league can predict anything. So, whatever it is, every team is going to have hard games – every one from top to bottom," said Calipari.
The Razorbacks currently sit at No. 23 in the AP Top 25, and will look to make a firm push for March Madness while facing their conference rivals over the next two and a half months.
