USC star JuJu Watkins reached an incredible milestone after she dazzled in the Trojans' dominant 104-65 win against Saint Louis in the Acrisure Holiday Invitational on Friday night. Watkins scored a season-best 34 points, with 7 of 9 from the free throw line, and had six rebounds.
Her performance was a historic one, as she became the fastest player to reach 15 career 30-point games in the past 10 seasons. Watkins narrowly edged out Caitlin Clark, who achieved the same feat in 42 games.
However, Watkins' latest achievement sparked debate online after a post made on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. While some fans believed that she deserved to be recognized as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) in college women's basketball for her achievements, others believed that Clark was the real GOAT and deserved better recognition than she was getting.
Watkins came off USC's tough loss to Notre Dame, a game in which many questioned her abilities. However, Friday's stellar performance reminded everyone that she is one of the most exciting WNBA prospects to watch out for.
Many fans agreed with some already calling her GOAT:
"She just keeps breaking all of Caitlin’s scoring records, one after one. Hilarious," another fan commented.
"She's a baller. Can't wait to watch Juju become one of the GOATs," another fan wrote.
Meanwhile, others believed Watkins did not deserve GOAT-level recognition over Clark, who currently plays for Indiana Fever in the WNBA. Since Watkins' rise at the collegiate level, many predicted that she would steal Clark's thunder. However, die-hard Caitlin Clark fans have their own opinions about the comparison, with some insisting the comparison is unnecessary.
For starters, Clark averaged 26.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 7.1 assists during her freshman year, while Watkins averaged 27.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. Both players' styles on the court are also different, with Watkins contributing more on the boards while Clark dominated in assists.
Either way, there is no denying the fact that Watkins is cementing her place as one of the best in the game at this level. The Los Angeles native has already been touted as the No. 1 pick for the WNBA Draft.
