USC star JuJu Watkins has strongly supported Caitlin Clark amidst the controversy surrounding her Time magazine interview and Athlete of the Year title.

During the interview, Clark spoke about the issue of race in sports, particularly white privilege.

"As a white person—there is privilege," Clark said.

Speaking to Fox News about Clark’s comments on white privilege, Watkins was all for it.

"It’s super dope. For her to kind of bring that to light was cool," she said.

She also backed the decision to honor Clark with the award.

"I’m all for it. I honestly think she deserves it. I don’t think anyone has changed the trajectory of the sport so much, so I honestly think she deserves every bit of it."

Clark's selection as Time's Athlete of the Year was heavily criticised by many, including Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson. In a CNN interview, Johnson suggested the decision was influenced by racial bias in the media.

"It’s the way media plays out race," she said, adding that the choice didn’t adequately recognize other players in the league.

Despite these criticisms, Watkins stood firmly in support of Clark, highlighting her impact on the sport.

JuJu Watkins heaps praise on Caitlin Clark

JuJu Watkins didn’t hold back her admiration for Caitlin Clark, praising the former Iowa Hawkeyes star’s exceptional skills on the court. In the same interview with Fox News, Watkins said something incredible:

"I wish I played like her [Clark]."

Despite being a generational talent in her own right, Watkins openly acknowledged Clark’s standout abilities, including her extraordinary three-point range and passing.

However, Watkins is not just an admirer; she has her sights set on Clark’s scoring record.

"Naturally, being on pace, it’s always in the back of my mind," Watkins said. "The goal is to continue to produce at this level, and do it as efficiently as I can."

Currently averaging 26.4 points per game in her career, Watkins will need to maintain a phenomenal scoring rate to surpass Clark.

While JuJu Watkins and Caitlin Clark share offensive brilliance, their skill sets differ significantly. Clark’s long-range shooting and passing define her game, while Watkins stands out with her versatile offensive arsenal and remarkable size for a guard.

Watkins’ candid acknowledgement of Clark’s talent and her own ambitions highlights the mutual respect between two of basketball’s brightest stars.
