While Angel Reese made headlines in NCAA women's basketball last season, Aneesah Morrow had a remarkable year for the LSU Tigers as well. The DePaul transfer made the All-Southeastern Conference first team alongside Reese, who was the SEC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American.
Despite not being a frontcourt player, Morrow averaged 16.4 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals. However, Reese will not be present for the 2024–25 season, which leaves a leadership void within the LSU Tigers' program.
With that, LSU coach Kim Mulkey has carved out a new role for Morrow, which potentially pits the senior guard as the team's new leader.
"I've sat down and talked to the coach all the time about it," Morrow said in an exclusive with The Bengal Tiger (Timestamp: 6:14). "She told me she wants me to be more of a vocal leader.
"She knows that I lead by example and my teammates will follow, but she wants me to be more verbal. And that's something I've been working on in practice. I've gotten a lot better at it actually."
Despite her path to developing her leadership qualities, Aneesah Morrow also aims to be the best teammate on the roster. While she already makes her case with relentless rebounding and disrupting passing lanes, she aims to be a teammate whom a player would pick for a two-on-two matchup.
Before sacrificing a significant chunk of her potential for Angel Reese last season, Morrow led the DePaul Blue Demons for two years. She averaged 23.8 ppg, 13.0 rpg and 2.7 steals in both years while making 46.3% of her shots. She was the Big East Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-American in her first year, when she led the nation in rebounding, and a third-team All-American as a sophomore.
Aneesah Morrow will join Kim Mulkey for SEC media day
As one of LSU’s leaders, Aneesah Morrow will be with Flau’jae Johnson and Kim Mulkey to represent LSU women’s basketball on Oct. 16 at the SEC media day. Some of their interviews will be aired on the SEC Network.
While the school retooled this season after reaching the Elite Eight last season, Morrow and Johnson are pillars of the culture within the program. Like other programs, LSU has also begun practice.
The program is slated to play two exhibition games before the regular season. Their first game will come against Xavier (Oct. 24), with the second against LSU-Alexandria (Oct. 30).
