Flau'jae Johnson's mom, Kia, has been her biggest fan, supporting her throughout her multi-faceted journeys. When a 13-year-old Johnson was packing her best bars for "The Rap Game," Kia applied for a three-month hiatus from her job. While she was willing to jeopardize her career to support Johnson, a doctor's visit revealed that she was pregnant with the LSU star's younger brother, Nixon.
This aligned Kia's maternity leave with Johnson's show, allowing her to be present with her daughter during her TV stint. The mother-daughter duo shared the turn of events during Flau'jae's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast on Sunday:
"Can you say that or is that illegal? What you told at your job to get out of there," Johnson prompted her mother to share the story.
"As you know Flau'jae always says I'm dropping babies," Kia began. "Well, just so happened I tried to take a leave of absence because I knew about the show, 'The Rap Game.' When I went to them, they was like, 'We can't give you 90 days off work' and I was like 'Who not? This is a lifetime opportunity for my kid. I'm gonna do it whether you give it to me or not.'
"So they was like, 'We can't give you that off'.' So just so happened, I went to the doctor and I was pregnant with Nixon. I told the doctor I was just not feeling well, 'I'm just really sick. I don't know if I'll able to stand up at work or something.'
"So he said, 'In the beginning of your pregnancy we might need to put you on bedrest for a couple months.' So Iotook the letter to my job, just so happens, it's the same time as I need a leave and go on the show with Flau'jae."
Johnson’s musical career was inspired by her late father, Jason Johnson, who went by the stage name Camoflauge. After her "The Rap Game" stint, Flau'jae Johnson participated in the 13th season of “America’s Got Talent.”
She made it to the next round by singing "Guns Down," an original song about her father’s death from gun violence. Johnson made it to the quarter-finals and became one of the young music sensations headlining the nation.
Flau'jae Johnson's most recent musical feat is her debut album, "Best of Both Worlds," which was released on June 28. The nine-song collection features collaborations with 2Rare, NLE Choppa and Lil Wayne.
