College basketball fans are celebrating as Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks set another milestone in the Southeastern Conference on Sunday.
The No. 2 Gamecocks garnered a 67-50 victory over the No. 5 Texas Longhorns in a high-profile SEC matchup at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. This marked the Gamecocks' 67th consecutive home win and their record-extending 51st straight SEC regular-season victory.
Fans took to social media to laud the accomplishment, with SEC Network’s Instagram post drawing attention to the feat.
“Even more impressive because the SEC is the best conference in the country. 🔥,” wrote @billcarty.
“LSU will end it,” predicted @ramziestes.
“They don’t want to see UCLA again, trust me 🎯,” added @stackpaper_bearlz.
Applause also poured in on X (Twitter), where fans and analysts shared their thoughts.
"To win 51 straight regular-season games in the SEC is insane. South Carolina Women’s Basketball is the gold standard," tweeted @dawncalipari.
"Gamecocks answer the bell in a top-5 showdown. Defense was dominant. That's 51 straight league wins, 67 straight at CLA, and a leg up on the Horns in the SEC regular-season title race," wrote South Carolina beat writer Alan Cole.
"Impressive 67-50 win for @GamecockWBB over Texas. Longhorns are really good, yet were shut down today. This after South Carolina lost key post player Ashlyn Watkins (ACL) for the season last week," noted ESPN’s Michael Voepel.
South Carolina’s defense was a major factor, holding the Longhorns to their lowest-scoring half of the season with just 22 points in the first 20 minutes. Resiliently, the Texas defense also showed its strength in the second half, limiting the Gamecocks to 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
The Gamecocks improved to 16-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Next, Dawn Staley’s team faces No. 18 Alabama on Thursday. South Carolina is also set to take on the No. 6 LSU Tigers, one of the last three remaining undefeated teams in women’s college basketball this month.
South Carolina Gamecocks Deliver Masterclass in Victory Over Longhorns
The South Carolina Gamecocks showcased an impressive performance in their home win against the Texas Longhorns, with coach Dawn Staley effectively deploying a 10-player rotation in which eight players scored at least four points.
Offensively, the Gamecocks experienced some struggles, with only three players reaching double figures. Chloe Kitts stood out with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and a block. Te-Hina Paopao contributed 11 points, four rebounds and an assist, while Joyce Edwards provided the spark off the bench with 10 points, two rebounds and a steal.
Defensively, South Carolina dominated, limiting Texas to its lowest-scoring quarter of the season, with the Longhorns managing just nine points on 4-of-26 shooting in the opening period. The Gamecocks shot an impressive 71% from the field in the first half, building a 39-22 lead.
They also stifled Texas' leading scorer, Madison Booker, who went 0-for-8 in the first quarter and finished the half 1-of-14 from the field.
South Carolina held the statistical edge in rebounds (42-40), assists (12-7) and blocks (9-3). However, Texas excelled in forcing turnovers, generating 10 steals and converting 22 Gamecock miscues into 16 points.
The highly anticipated matchup turned out to be Texas’ lowest-scoring half since its 2021 Elite Eight matchup against South Carolina, a game the Gamecocks won decisively, 62-34.
