Lucy Olsen and the Iowa Hawkeyes fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 74-66, on Sunday. The Jan Jensen-coached squad was valiant in their efforts to cut the Terps' 25-point edge in the first half to single digits but ultimately, it was not enough as the Hawkeyes now fell to 2-2 in Big Ten conference play.

Olsen played for 32 minutes during the game and was her team's highest scorer, dropping 19 points on 6-for-17 shooting. She hit four 3-pointers and went a perfect 3-out-of-3 from the charity stripe. The fourth-year standout also pitched in three rebounds, two assists and four steals.

It was Olsen who opened the game's scoring, connecting on a jumper by way of Sydney Affolter for Iowa to get the early lead. Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, this would be their only score for the next four minutes as Maryland would build up a 13-2 edge by the 5:04 mark. Other Iowa players would step in to fill in the offense afterward, as Olsen wouldn't score for the rest of the first period down 22-15.

Looking to level up her play, Olsen would blitz the Terrapins backcourt with a steal in the opening minute of the second quarter. But, the Hawkeyes just couldn't keep up with their opposition as they saw their deficit balloon to 21 points, 39-18.

The 21-year-old did all she could with two minutes left in the first half, draining 2 three-balls and three freebies, yet the Terrapins were still up, 48-27, heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Iowa rally ensued as they kept Maryland at 51 for the majority of the frame with Olsen chipping away at their lead with made baskets. The Hawkeyes were able to trim the Terrapins' lead down to 59-43.

Heading into the final period, an Olsen corner 3-pointer would bring down the gap to single digits. Through the team's persistence, they were able to pull within five, 67-58. Olsen and company would pull out all the stops, but they were unable to come closer as the Maryland Terrapins held on for a win, 74-66.

A final nail to the coffin was when Olsen even fouled out with five fouls in the latter minutes of the final frame.

Here are Lucy Olsen's final stats for Sunday's loss.

Lucy Olsen addresses Iowa's turnover issues

After the game, Lucy Olsen was asked about Iowa's turnover problems against Maryland. They committed 21 turnovers during the game, with Olsen responsible for three of them.

A reporter asked Olsen about Iowa's issues with post passes in particular, and the Hawkeyes guard responded:

"As a guard, we got to make better passes, better decisions, see where the defense is playing them. We work on it a lot, but I think a lot of it is mental, and we just got to be confident in our passes to the post."

In part due to the turnovers, the Hawkeyes were not able to get the win on Lisa Bluder Night. The former coach retired last year in May and was celebrated with a halftime presentation applauded by the home audience.

In her time, Bluder led the program to back-to-back NCAA national championship games in 2023 and 2024. The 63-year-old is also Iowa's winningest tactician ever with 528 wins in 14 seasons. She has a career total of 716 wins when adding in her 10 years at the helm of the Duke Blue Devils.
