Iowa freshman Taylor Stremlow recalled the moment that led her to choose the Hawkeyes above other schools that showed interest in her. The 5-foot-10 Stremlow talked about the experience in the latest episode of the Fresh Tawk podcast with Iowa forward Jada Gyamfi. The video was posted on YouTube on Tuesday.
The four-star freshman from Verona High School in Madison, Wisconsin, told Jada Gyamfi that she formulated a pros and cons list of the schools that were interested in getting her services. This served as her guide on which program she should choose.
"I have made a little pros and cons list (during the process)," Stremlow, who chose Iowa over Illinois, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Kansas State and Minnesota, said. [15:30-15:32]
The guard noted that she chose Iowa over the six schools because she felt at home and believed it would help her become a better basketball player.
Stremlow also recalled the school visits were initially exciting until it got to a point where the constant trips and conversations were overwhelming. The decision was tough for her but ultimately she knew Iowa was the right place for her game.
Taylor Stremlow's acquisition boosts dreaded Iowa guard corps
Iowa's acquisition of Taylor Stremlow makes the Hawkeyes guard rotation deeper after Lucy Olsen and Sydney Affolter. Aside from the three, Jan Jensen has Taylor McCabe, Kylie Feuerbach and Callie Levin taking turns in an effective Iowa guard corps that remained strong despite the departure of NCAA All-Time leading scorer Caitlin Clark.
Stremlow is an all-around player who in her junior year averaged 16.1 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals per game. Her performance earned her multiple high school awards, including Big 8 Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference and AP Wisconsin All-State Second Team.
Stremlow also brings her excellent court vision, shotmaking and ball-handling skills to Iowa. She could be a good alternative offensive option in case Lucy Olsen is guarded by their rivals' main defenders.
Iowa coach Jan Jensen gave Stremlow a sign of approval and noted she is fearless and fits the role of a backup point guard.
“Taylor Stremlow is more of a wing guard, but she’s crafty, fun and gutty. She hasn’t shied away from trying to run the point position when we need to give Lucy a break,” Jensen said (per On3.com).
Stremlow will be one of the key pieces in Iowa's campaign this season, which will begin on Nov. 6 against Northern Illinois. They hope to continue their reign of dominance in the Big Ten Conference in the post-Caitlin Clark era.
