South Carolina sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley had the support of her girlfriend, Ja’Meesia, in a special way during the Gamecocks' highly anticipated matchup against LSU.
The No. 2-ranked South Carolina defeated the No. 5-ranked LSU 66-56 on Friday. Fulwiley took to Instagram on Saturday to share moments on the court after the game, with Ja’Meesia's bold custom jacket celebrating Fulwiley’s rising basketball career.
Ja’Meesia was seen donning a striking black jacket featuring Fulwiley’s name and jersey number, "12," alongside custom graphics showcasing key moments of her on-court prowess. The thoughtful piece showcased her support and pride in her partner's athletic achievements.
“Me and mines,” the caption said.
Fulwiley, who has been making waves in her sophomore season with the Gamecocks, took the time to celebrate the win with Ja’Meesia. In the first photo, the couple posed with bright smiles, throwing playful hand gestures as they stood on the hardwood court.
One of the images showed a touching moment, with the two embracing, while another photo captured Fulwiley proudly pointing towards the intricate details of the jacket.
MiLaysia Fulwiley opens up about choosing South Carolina over other schools
South Carolina standout MiLaysia Fulwiley shared her journey to joining the Gamecocks in a YouTube video in December last year. She described the unique challenges and emotions she faced during her recruitment process.
Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Fulwiley was widely expected to stay local and play for one of the nation’s top women’s basketball programs.
“Honestly, most schools were actually scared to make an offer and talk to me,” Fulwiley said. “They were like, ‘She’s going to South Carolina, she’s from Columbia.’ This is the number one school, and I’m from here. I live here, like why would I go somewhere else?”
While the hometown connection made her decision seem pre-determined, Fulwiley wanted to keep her options open and experience the recruiting process like other top-tier athletes.
As a highly sought-after five-star recruit (per ESPN), she embraced the opportunity to visit other schools and explore what they had to offer.
“I just wanted to have a regular experience like all the other five-star athletes in high school and see what college is about,” Fulwiley said. “I really enjoyed all of my visits.”
Despite considering other programs, Fulwiley ultimately felt South Carolina was the best fit, thanks to coach Dawn Staley’s honesty and vision. Staley offered a straightforward and genuine pitch.
“Dawn wasn’t giving me any false narratives,” Fulwiley said. “She was just going to say, ‘We have what you need here if you want to go to the WNBA. We have all the tools. You just work hard, and I see you being a generational player.’”
Staley’s belief in Fulwiley and her potential was a game-changer, providing the young athlete with a sense of trust and security.
“She told me that she believed in me,” Fulwiley explained. “And I felt safe when talking to her. It felt like home for real.”
Now, as a Gamecock, Fulwiley is thriving in the environment she dreamed of. Fulwiley has averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists, shooting 41.2% from the floor this season.
