Taylor Stremlow reflects on lessons learned from Iowa's tough loss to Maryland
The No. 8-ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated the No. 23-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes 74-66 on Sunday. Following the hard-fought loss, Iowa freshman Taylor Stremlow offered thoughtful insights, shedding light on the valuable lessons the Hawkeyes took away from the experience.
Maryland, enjoying its best start to a season since 2011-12, dominated the game from the outset. With the biggest lead of the game being 25 points, Maryland (14-0, 4-0 Big Ten) set the pace early, sinking eight of its first 11 field goals from beyond the arc, a rhythm the Hawkeyes (12-3, 2-2) struggled to keep up with in the first half.
“Speaking about the loss, I think that was crucial for us to see that we're a really good team,” Stremlow said. The first half wasn't pretty, but we definitely cleaned it up and we didn't give up.”
Lucy Olsen put up 19 points to lead Iowa with Sydney Affolter finishing with 12 points. The second half showcased a much more composed and focused Iowa squad. While they ultimately fell short, the Hawkeyes demonstrated grit and tenacity, qualities that Stremlow emphasized as critical moving forward.
“I think the biggest thing is knowing it’s not all about how you start but how you finish,” Stremlow said.
Stremlow also noted how the game served as a learning experience, offering insights that will guide the Hawkeyes in future matchups.
“I think we learned a lot from that second half, and I think we know what to do moving forward,” Stremlow said.
