Mike Krzyzewski criticizes NCAAB landscape while lamenting how "disheartened" Jim Larranaga looked in his retirement conference

Legendary Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski had a heartfelt reaction to Jim Larranaga's decision to step down as Miami Hurricanes coach. While speaking to former NFL player Dusty Dvoracek on the "Basketball & Beyond with Coach K" podcast on Wednesday, he criticized the NCAA for not implementing gradual changes to support the evolving NIL landscape in college sports.

Larranaga's retirement came due to the increasing demands and unique navigations of NIL. Krzyzewski, who advocates for proper measures around NIL, said that watching his fellow coach retire took an emotional toll on him.

“My hat’s off to Jim for his career, but again, it was sad for me to see how disheartened he was," Krzyzewski said (Timestamp: 1:10). "He was giving up a thing that he gave his whole life to. And, again, I know people are out there, ‘Yeah, he got paid money,’ and all that. Let’s just keep quiet for a little bit.

"There is a genuineness to who he was, and I’m so glad he expressed it so that we could feel him, not just hear him. I felt what he was saying, not just heard what he was saying."

Six former Flordia State players filed a lawsuit against FSU coach Leonard Hamilton in December. According to the lawsuit, the coach had promised Darin Green Jr., Primo Spears, De'Ante Green, Cam'Ron Fletcher, Jalen Warley and Josh Nickelberry $250,000 each in NIL compensation for their previous season with the Seminoles, which they still waiting on.
