Robin Lundberg put forward fans' sentiments around MiLaysia Fulwiley after Dawn Staley's comment about her roster. Earlier this month, the 2024 NCAA championship coach claimed that none of the players on her current team have enough skills to start in the WNBA. Fans pointed fingers at Staley's criticism by citing inconsistent game-time for Fulwiley.
Lundberg defended Staley by acknowledging her approach and coaching style. However, by giving a glimpse of MiLaysia Fulwiley's unique game, he also explained the fans' perspective in his latest YouTube video released on Friday.
"So that was Fulwiley in that game (Missouri), she had a pretty good performance in limited minutes, she scored a bunch of points but she didn't actually play that many minutes in that game, 17 points in 20 minutes played," Robin Lundberg said. (4:30)
"So, I think there are fans who want to see more of her and think, okay this is the kind of player who can be one of the best players in the country, who can be mentioned alongside the likes of Paige Bueckers and JuJu Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo and Flau'jae Johnson and the rest of the top players in the country."
Robin Lundberg also points out that it is hard for fans to evaluate the overall potential of MiLaysia Fulwiley without witnessing her consistently on the court.
He also feels the amount of talent on the Gamecocks roster hardly leaves any concrete playing time for Fulwiley.
Last season, South Carolina saw four different scoring leaders throughout their seven NCAA tournament games. The stretch highlights Staley's dynamic coaching and rotations, which do not rely on an individual player's skill set.
MiLaysia Fulwiley's style garnered praise from Stephen Curry
MiLaysia Fulwiley's style of basketball has drawn comparisons to Stephen Curry from fans. The four-time NBA champion himself tipped his hat to the guard for her confident and creative game.
Not only did Curry commend aspects of Fulwiley's style but also claimed to see similarities with his NBA flair.
"Her athleticism, her style and creativity just jumped off the screen," Stephen Curry said in the Dec. 23 release by Greenville News' Lulu Kesin. "She had that flashy kind of vibe."
"Very similar to how I play. There’s a flair for the dramatic, a creativity that she always finds a way to express. She has a killer instinct."
Stephen Curry's comments for Fulwiley are not performative as entrust her to represent the Curry Brand as the first college athlete to have a deal with his shoe company.
