South Carolina's MiLaysia Fulwiley was feeling it for the Gamecocks in their 101-60 blowout win over Oklahoma on Sunday. The sophomore guard knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from near half-court at the end of the first quarter.
When she was asked about her thought process on the viral logo shot, Fulwiley made it clear that she had one thing on her mind.
"First, what I was thinking about is, 'Oh, she's backing up, so I might as well shoot.' I can't get taken out of the game, because it's a buzzer-beater," Fulwiley said postgame (0:50 onwards). "I just looked at them, and I saw an opening in the hole and took it."
"Coach told Raven to give me the ball, so I was like, 'Okay, I have eight seconds. I can either shoot it or I can drive' ... I felt like I needed to mix it up, so I just shot it. When it went in, I was so excited and I was so happy that my teammates were so excited."
MiLaysia Fulwiley, who finished the game with 15 points and seven assists off the bench, also credited her teammate Sania Feagin for pumping her up.
"Sania told me to go up and not worry about getting my shot blocked, and that's what I did today, and it worked out for me," she said.
MiLaysia Fulwiley shares optimism ahead of upcoming Top-5 clash against LSU
The stage is set for a battle between two top teams in women's college basketball as No. 2 South Carolina hosts No. 5 LSU on Thursday.
MiLaysia Fulwiley shared her excitement for the matchup during the postgame media conference after the Oklahoma win.
"It feels good — I like playing well because it motivates me to play even better and outdo myself. As a team, I feel like we all just motivate each other to want to do good," MiLaysia said (2:38).
"I think the love we have for each other is going to get us through these tough games and the next week coming up."
The Lady Tigers, led by Flau'jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow, are unbeaten this season, while South Carolina has suffered one loss to No. 1 UCLA. Since then the Gamecocks have won 13 straight games.
MiLaysia Fulwiley, who is averaging 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, will likely start the game on the bench. However, her ability to provide a spark off the bench will be crucial to South Carolina's chances of victory.
