MiLaysia Fulwiley played one of her shortest stints for South Carolina this season on Monday night, playing only nine minutes. But despite her brief period on the court, the 5-foot-10 sophomore guard contributed fairly well for the No. 2 Gamecocks (20-1, 8-0 in SEC), helping her team beat the No. 18 Tennessee Lady Volunteers (15-5, 3-5) 70-63.
Fulwiley finished with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. However, her playing time was cut short due to four quick fouls in her first five minutes on the court. The Columbia, South Carolina native was inserted on the court in the middle of the first quarter but committed two quick fouls.
She returned in the second period and buried two triples that handed the Gamecocks a 24-20 lead. They didn't relinquish that advantage the rest of the way as the Dawn Staley-coached team built a 22-point lead which was enough cushion to fend off the last-ditch surge by the Lady Volunteers.
Fulwiley scored her ninth point in the third period on her third triple, giving South Carolina (20-1, 8-0 in SEC) a 48-30 edge but two quick fouls again forced her to sit out until the start of the fourth frame.
She did return in the payoff period and scored a winner on the 7:14 mark, handing the Gamecocks a 63-45 lead. She was subbed out with 5:58 remaining when Tennessee (15-5, 3-5) mounted a rally.
Fulwiley didn't return to the court as Dawn Staley used her more experienced starters plus the No. 2 freshman Joyce Edwards to finish the job for South Carolina.
Here is MILaysia Fulwiley's stats in South Carolina's win over Tennessee:
MiLaysia Fulwiley plays third-shortest stint with South Carolina
MiLaysia Fulwiley's nine-minute stint in Monday's game against Tennessee was the third-shortest stint she has ever played in a South Carolina uniform. It could've been five had Dawn Staley didn't gamble on inserting Fulwiley at the start of the fourth period despite four fouls already slapped against her.
The veteran coach trusted the mercurial sophomore guard and scored a two-pointer to breach double-digits. Fulwiley's tendency to be overeager and overcommitment for the flair of taking high-risk shots and passes has brought her to Staley's dog house most of the time but she has been effective all season long.
Fulwiley making her first three 3-pointers but missing the next four was an example of her quality, and Staley trusts the hometown talent to contribute to the team. In 20 games, the guard has been efficient, averaging 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 18.7 minutes this season.
In a deep South Carolina team filled with 10 McDonald's All-Americans, a player is lucky enough to play between five and 20 minutes. This is how Dawn Staley manages her lineup in the 2024-25 women's college basketball season and she has been effective in doing that, resulting in three national championships.
