The Florida State men's basketball team secured their first win on the road this season, pulling off a convincing 80-65 victory over Miami. Soon after the win on Jan. 8, the Seminoles took a dig at their intra-state rival on social media. They added a cheeky caption for their post on X to announce their success at Coral Gables.
"Hurricane has been downgraded to a tropical storm," wrote the Seminoles on X.
Within minutes of the Seminoles uploading their post, college basketball fans flocked to X to express their opinions. Some of them took to piling on the Hurricanes' misery, taking their own digs at one of the Seminoles' fiercest rivals.
"More of a tropical depression," said one fan.
"Great win! We own them," said another.
Others decided to mock Miami senior Matt Cleveland, who left the Seminoles for the Hurricanes following the 2022-23 season. Despite Cleveland finishing as the Hurricanes' top scorer with 16 points on the evening, his winless streak against the Seminoles became a talking point for fans.
"Matt Cleveland is STILL winless vs us," said one fan.
"BELT 2 AHHS F**k Da Canes F**k Mather Cleveland #GoNoles," said another.
Another fan added, "Welp," while posting a picture of Cleveland from his days as a Seminole.
Florida State continued its dominance in the series against Miami
Florida State's comprehensive 80-65 win over Miami on Wednesday was their 13th in the last 14 games, and their fourth in a row. Their only loss in this series in the last seven years came in the 2022-23 season, when the Hurricanes scored an 86-63 victory at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida.
In the game, Leonard Hamilton's side recorded 26 assists. This, per The Voice of Seminoles' Jeff Culhane, was a new program record for the most assists in a single game on the road in ACC.
Freshman guard Daquan Davis was responsible for almost half of them, dishing out 10 assists while scoring nine points.
Junior forward Malique Ewin was the spearhead in the Seminoles' massive victory over Miami, finishing with an impressive double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in his 23-minute performance.
The Seminoles improved its overall record to 11-4 and its conference record to 2-2, as they hope to make a push for the postseason. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes slumped to 4-11 overall, and are yet to score a win in conference play.
