Sophomore JuJu Watkins delivered yet another stellar performance in USC's 20-point victory over Michigan, 78-58, on Sunday, Dec. 29. The dynamic scorer lit up the court with 31 points, while also contributing a complete stat line of five rebounds, seven assists, three steals and three blocks.
Additionally, Watkins reached a significant milestone before the game, becoming the fastest Trojan to score 1,000 points in their college career. She achieved this feat in just the 14th game of her second year under the guidance of coach Lindsay Gottlieb.
Here is Watkins being awarded a commemorative basketball alongside her main tactician.
Achieving an impressive feat, the young budding star was celebrated by several celebrities who were present to witness her make history and end 2024 on a high note.
One notable attendee was Flea, a founding member of the legendary band Red Hot Chili Peppers, who watched the game at USC's home floor.
Former USC standout and NFL veteran Matt Leinart was also seen enjoying the fixture.
Among the star-studded attendees, several USC Trojans legends graced the floor. Los Angeles Sparks guard McKenzie Forbes, along with former professional basketball players Cheryl Miller and Rhonda Windham, were also spotted in attendance.
Despite the star-studded audience, including numerous personalities and celebrities, the lights were not too bright for second-year sensation JuJu Watkins. She delivered a remarkable performance, shooting 8-for-19 from the field and an impressive 13-for-14 from the free-throw line, good for 92.9%.
With the new year on the horizon, the No. 4-ranked USC Trojans will aim to secure their 13th win on Wednesday, the first day of 2025, against the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the same venue.
JuJu Watkins achieves fourth-fastest time to reach 1,000 points in NCAA history
While she is the fastest USC Trojan to ever eclipse 1000 points, doing so in 20 fewer games than former college standout Cheryl Miller, Watkins also achieved the mark in the fourth fewest games in NCAA history. This accomplishment ties her with other great college scorers like Elena Delle Donne and Kathy Miller, as they all reached it in just 38 games.
With the 2024-25 season still in its early stages and conference play yet to commence, Watkins' trajectory suggests she may reach even more milestones by the end of the campaign. After all, she is averaging an impressive 24.8 points per game this year.
