Leonard Hamilton is reportedly being sued by former players for failing to pay out NIL deals. This, of course, prompted plenty of reactions from the basketball community.
According to a report published by Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger on Monday, six former Florida State players filed a lawsuit against the Seminoles' coach, claiming he failed to fulfill his promise of paying each of them $250,000 in NIL payments.
Many fans believe the NCAA needs to make changes to the current NIL structure while being surprised that Hamilton is in this particular situation. Here are some of their reactions.
"NIL never should've been introduced. Getting a full ride scholarship should be good enough. Want money? Then work and get to the pro level, otherwise complete your degree on a full ride and get a good job with it," one fan wrote.
"Leonard Hamilton ran one of the best team programs in college basketball for years and now his own players are suing him for a oral agreement. We need guide rails NCAA please," another wrote.
"They gonna sue the coach? He probably promised that based off the boosters," a fan posted.
Others thought about the lack of a legally binding physical document that would show they were promised the specified amount of money, while others see it as a need for programs to adjust their way of scouting.
"If it's not on paper they wasting time, anybody can promise you anything," one fan said.
"This is the era where scout teams really have to lock in and find under-the-radar players that are just happy to be there," one fan wrote.
"What a year for fsu athletics," one fan remarked.
What's next for Leonard Hamilton?
Leonard Hamilton has helped the Seminoles get off to a 9-4 start this season.
Meanwhile, NIL remains a controversial but important topic for players, coaches and NCAA officials to discuss as livelihoods are at stake. With Hamilton's situation, it seems there is still a lot of work to be done to stabilize the current landscape of college sports.
While Hamilton finds a solution to the lawsuit, the Seminoles prepare for their next matchup against Syracuse in Tallahassee, Florida, at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
