College basketball fans were muted or turned off at Cooper Flagg's latest performance in Duke's 23-point win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday night at the Cameron Indoor Stadium. Flagg tallied 24 points, three rebounds, six assists, four steals and one block in 30 minutes of action for the Blue Devils, who improved to 11-2 (3-0 ACC).
The stat line was typical numbers for the 18-year-old freshman, but some fans didn't feel anything special about his performance and shared their postgame sentiments on social media.
One fan suggested the five-star guard/forward could be a good NBA player in the future but will fall short as a superstar.
"Nothing about him screams superstar to me. I think he has a very high floor and will be a good NBA player though," he wrote on X.
Another college basketball enthusiast slammed those who seemed to have easily climbed the Cooper Flagg bandwagon, apparently because of his race.
"I’m not hyped about this white boy yet. Ppl get overly hyped when it’s some athletic white guy that comes around every 100 years," the user said.
A random hoops fan posted he wasn't worthy of the hype just yet, while another seemed hurt to tweet about Flagg's latest game.
"Just not moving my needle," a fan tweeted.
"This was painful for you to tweet I know it," the other fan added.
College basketball followers even downgraded his possible NBA draft placing as they seemed to be not blown away by his performances.
"He’s more of a 3-5 for me in the draft can’t see number one," one wrote.
"Late 2nd rounder imo," another fan said.
Although Cooper Flagg's production in Duke's 88-65 win against Virginia Tech seemed impressive, some fans were subdued or disappointed with the 18-year-old prodigy.
They like to see Flagg drop consistent performances but are seemingly seeing the opposite of it. This is evident in his last four games, where he is on and off in offense for the Blue Devils.
Cooper Flagg becomes sixth Duke player to produce 200-100 in first 13 games
Cooper Flagg continued to build around his superstar status in college basketball. His 24-point night against Virginia Tech on Tuesday puts him in the great company of Duke legends who have produced 200 points and 100 rebounds in their 13th game.
Flagg, who currently has 220 points and 106 rebounds, joined Vernon Carey Jr. (233 points and 117 rebounds), Jahlil Okafor (253, 113), Zion Williamson (263, 123), Marvin Bagley III (274, 142) and Jabari Parker (278, 104), per Sports Illustrated.
Save for Carey, who was picked in the second round, Okafor, Williamson, Bagley and Parker were lottery picks, with Zion Williamson being selected No. 1 in the 2019 NBA draft. Williamson and Bagley are still with their NBA teams for 2024-25, but the latter is a bench player for the Washington Wizards.
On the other hand, Williamson isn't playing for the New Orleans Pelicans this campaign, although there are reports that he'll make his season debut soon. It could also be an ominous sign for Flagg that putting up impressive numbers in college doesn't mean you can put up similar statistics in the NBA.
