Geno Auriemma gave an update on Paige Bueckers' possible knee injury after the guard was sidelined from Sunday's contest against Villanova Wildcats. Bueckers faced an inadvertent bump by VU's freshman guard Jasmine Bascoe as both players trailed for a loose ball. As a result, Bueckers stumbled to the floor in pain before she walked back to the locker room.
Even though she returned moments later, the guard did not re-enter the game again. Geno Auriemma addressed the media's concerns around the star guard in the post-game interview, hinting that Bueckers avoided a major setback, comparing the incident to Azzi Fudd's knee sprain from December 2024.
"Like when it was with Azzi, it's not the worst that we can imagine, so that's great news considering how awkward it was."
However, Auriemma did not detail Bueckers' situation or share a timeline. Fan stormed X to react to Auriemma's update on Paige Bueckers.
"Omg, this is my worst nightmare," one fan wrote.
"Must have been flashback city for Paige. No wonder she was upset. Hoping for the best 💙💙," a fan wrote.
"Hopefully Paige is ok and she can play the next game," another fan commented.
More fans reacted to Auriemma's update, with some reading between the lines and others calling him out for not giving a definite answer.
"I think hes saying that its not a torn acl.," a fan commented.
"Ummm…I’m a legendary hall of fame coach and I’d like to say…I have nothing to say….and as Forrest Gump said…that’s all I’ve got to say about that 🤨," another fan wrote.
"Not the worst thing we can imagine, is he saying it isn’t a torn ACL?" another fan commented.
Paige Bueckers has a history with left knee issues
While Geno Auriemma's update hints that Paige Bueckers will return to the roster in January itself, the timeline could be extended due to the existing medical history of her left knee.
Bueckers is coming off rehabbing from an ACL surgery after suffering the injury in a pickup game in 2022. It was the biggest setback in her basketball career, forcing her to miss out on an entire season.
"I knew it was bad," Bueckers said about the injury (via UConn Blog). "I felt a pop. I’m not really sure if I heard it, but I felt it for sure. I knew something was wrong."
This came right after Paige Bueckers missed nearly half of her sophomore season to a lateral meniscus and tibial plateau fracture suffered in the ending minutes of a contest against Notre Dame. The injury kept her away from the court for nearly three months.
The Huskies are set to play against the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday but it is yet to be confirmed if Paige Bueckers will suit up.
