South Carolina coach Dawn Staley always extends her support to her former and current players on social media, and this time A'ja Wilson is on the receiving end. The NCAA and WNBA champion is part of the lineup that will represent Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
During the opening ceremony on Friday, coach Staley shared pictures of Wilson with fellow basketball player and Olympian Stephen Curry.
" @_ajawilson22 on that A’ONE ish! Love you A! Keep sitting on top of the world!!," captioned Staley on X/Twitter.
A'One is A'ja Wilson's upcoming signature shoe with Nike that is set to be released in 2025. The Las Vegas Aces star made her Olympic debut in Tokyo and won gold.
Dawn Staley enjoys her time in Paris with the Presidential delegation
Coach Staley joined First Lady of the United States Jill Biden for the opening ceremony as part of the Presidential delegation in support of Team USA athletes. The delegation also included three-time Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano, U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco Denise Campbell Bauer, and Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee president Casey Wasserman.
Staley posted pictures from her first day in Paris to her Instagram and wrote:
"Day 1 was truly an amazing experience. Candy? Coins? Seals? PJ? Anyone? Only it is PRESIDENTIAL for me."
Although this was a proud and happy moment for the three-time NCAA championship-winning coach, it was slightly sullied by a user on X/Twitter.
Staley quickly replied to the user's remark:
"Uuuuhhh my taxes have paid for this one! And please don’t try to make anyone feel bad…we are representing the red, white and blue with great pride and with the utmost patriotism," she said.
This is not coach Staley's first time in the Olympics, as she had previously participated as a player and a coach. She was part of Team USA for the first time during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and competed in the succeeding games at Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). She won gold in all three instances.
In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Staley was the head coach of the US Women's Basketball team who she led to victory.
