After a single season with the Kentucky Wildcats, Reed Sheppard announced on Thursday that he would be entering the 2024 NBA draft.
In a video posted to X, Sheppard thanked the Kentucky fans for all their love and said:
“Playing basketball at the University of Kentucky was a big part of my dream. ... However, there is another part of my dream: to play basketball in the NBA. I believe it is time to pursue that dream."
Sheppard added:
"I’m so thankful to wear the blue and white jersey that represents my family, my friends and the hard working faithful fans of the Big Blue Nation. You have been with me from Day 1, faithful and passionate. I’m asking you to go with me on this journey. I'm looking forward to taking you with me.
"I’ll represent you with all of the characteristics that make us Kentuckians: passion, humility, perseverance, sacrifice and joy. And one day, I’ll return to family, to friends, to Kentucky — my home. I love you, BBN."
Reed Sheppard's draft projection
Reed Sheppard is a predicted lottery pick coming up within the top 10 spots in most mock drafts. As the Wildcats' assists and steals leader, Sheppard averaged 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals. He played an average of 28.9 minutes and started in five of the 33 games.
Some analysts have expressed doubts about him due to his lack of size (6-foot-2), but Reed Sheppard makes up for it with his incredible shooting skill, especially from the three-point range. Sheppard's efficiency on the court earned him the SEC Freshman of the Year award.
While he does have the potential to be a one-and-done star, many fans hoped that Reed Sheppard would return since he was the last remaining piece from the John Calipari era. Rob Dillingham and DJ Wagner have both declared for the NBA draft with the latter entering the transfer portal since he maintains his college eligibility.
The NBA draft is scheduled for June 26- 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
