Only 1 other team comes close to Dan Hurley’s UConn, claims NCAA analyst Jay Bilas: “This is historic”

Under coach Dan Hurley, the UConn Huskies have become one of the most dominant teams in the modern era of college basketball, repeating as national champions in April. Going into the next season, the Huskies are hunting for an unprecedented three-peat that would elevate them into the annals of modern history.

During an episode of the "How Bout Them Huskies" podcast, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas compared the UConn Huskies to coach John Wooden's all-conquering UCLA Bruins teams of the last 1960s to early 1970s (3:00).

“It’s kind of honestly hard to wrap your head around how dominant they’ve been,” Bilas said. “You have to go back a long way to find a comparable (team) … to go 12 straight games in the postseason over two years without a single-digit challenge … nobody does that.
“This is historic what’s going on. … I heard an interview where Danny Hurley kind of sounded like he was saying, 'We’re getting a little disrespected here. There should be more talk about this.' And I think he’s actually right. The 25-year run they’ve had now with six national championships in 25 years … it’s them and UCLA, and that’s it. There’s nobody else that’s done that. It’s been remarkable.”

Dan Hurley believes UConn doesn't get enough attention

The UConn Huskies have dominated both women's and men's college basketball in the past 25 years under coaches Geno Auriemma, Jim Calhoun and Dan Hurley, who even turned down a lucrative offer to become the L. A Lakers coach a few months ago.

During an in-depth interview with Graham Bensinger in September, Hurley revealed that his all-conquering Huskies team does not get the attention they deserve despite being the sole college power in men's basketball for the past few years.

“We don’t get as much coverage (as we should),” Dan Hurley said. “We should be the consensus No. 1 team going into next year. … We’ve been one of the best sports organizations the last two years. The talent, the teamwork, the energy that we play with. The excellence, the old school values of players holding each other accountable. Coaches holding players accountable.
"Striving for championships. Dominating in pressure moments. We suck here at creating social media buzz and dropping TikToks. … The things that we stand for should be celebrated more.”

Dan Hurley has the chance to write his UConn Huskies into the history books with a three-peat next season. The charismatic coach, who has admitted to having a chip on his shoulder before, would ensure that his team continues to be the talk of the town with such a feat.
