UConn guard Paige Bueckers' safety was reportedly under-threat due to stalking and harassment by a supposed fan. Identified as Robert Cole Parmalee of Grants Pass, Oregon, the perpetrator was reportedly after the guard since February.
On Friday, Parmalee was arrested by UConn police and was held on a $100,000 bond. He appeared before the Connecticut Superior Court in Rockville on Monday and was reportedly charged by the UConn police with breach of peace, electronic stalking, and harassment.
The 40-year-old Cole Parmalee was first arrested by the Connecticut State Police on Aug. 27 after an officer reportedly saw him walking along a limited-access highway near Bradley International Airport outside Hartford. Parmalee reportedly told the officer that he was going to see Bueckers.
As per ESPN, the officer who picked Parmalee from the highway was informed by dispatch about an outstanding arrest warrant for the latter in Oregon. While he faced extradition to the state, UConn claimed in a statement that the state of Oregon planned to dismiss those charges. Later, the UConn PD served the arrest warrant on Friday at Hartford Correctional Center.
More details about Paige Bueckers' alleged stalking case
The stalking and harassment reportedly first began in February, when Robert Parmalee reached out to Paige Bueckers via Instagram. Although she never responded, Parmalee persisted and began making references to the guard on his social media accounts. This includes a fake invitation to their wedding and an engagement ring.
In his last post prior to the arrest in August, Parmalee detailed his plans of proposing to Paige Bueckers and getting her expelled from the UConn Huskies basketball team. One disturbing post on his TikTok account read:
"And if I cannot live with a woman of my choosing, [Bueckers], then I will choose to die, and I will choose to take all of you that [op]pose me, oppose us, to hell, and return, king..."
Robert Parmalee is also reported to have sent emails to the school since June where he would claim that he was a member of the royal family and wanted to marry a member of the women's basketball team. The UConn campus police described these emails as 'ramblings', although some allegedly directed threats to Bueckers' friends and family.
While Paige Bueckers was his primary target, Parmalee is also reported to have reached out to officials at USC, LSU and a sports agent. For now, protective and no-contact orders have been issued for Paige Bueckers in court. If the perpetrator makes bail, he will be subjected to "intense pretrial supervision and GPS monitoring," as per Judge Richard Rubino on Monday.
Parmalee's next court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.
