Paige Bueckers and Huskies face biggest challenge of season against JuJu Watkins and the Trojans

Paige Bueckers and her Huskies are in the middle of a challenging December schedule and face one of its toughest tests on Saturday against JuJu Watkins and No. 7 USC. After a solid win over Iowa State on Tuesday, the Huskies need to find a way to maintain that level of performance consistently.

Although the team has areas to improve, coach Geno Auriemma remains optimistic.

"I felt like this December stretch would be very revealing—whether in a great way, a good way, or a not-so-good way," Auriemma said, adding, "So far, I think this team is resilient. We’re able to bounce back. We’re learning, getting a little better, tougher, and starting to believe in each other more."

The Huskies suffered their first loss of the season on Dec. 12 against Notre Dame, exposing some weaknesses. To finish this month strong, there are a few key areas they need to address.

Bueckers and Sarah Strong have been leading UConn’s offense, but the team needs another player to step up consistently. Azzi Fudd seemed poised to fill that role, but her health remains a concern.

Fudd suffered a minor knee sprain on Dec. 7 against Louisville and has missed three games since. She hasn’t been warming up with the team and is still considered day-to-day.

"We’re going to need three reliable, high-level scorers all season," Auriemma explained, adding, "I don’t care where they come from, but hopefully, when Azzi is back, we’ll have at least four."

The Huskies will be looking to Paige Bueckers to lead them, but the rest of the squad will need to step up in Fudd's absence. UConn plays USC on Saturday at the XL Center at 8 pm ET.
