Geno Auriemma's No. 7 UConn Huskies suffered a 70-72 loss to No. 4 USC last Saturday. But the real drama was brewing off-court, on social media, as sophomore guard KK Arnold's mom reposted not-so-subtle digs at the Huskies' coach.
After Geno benched Arnold for much of the fourth quarter, despite her stellar defensive performance, her mom, Kimberly Blackwell Arnold, reposted a few tweets that were critical of the coaching decision.
Here are some of the tweets she shared:
Come ON, Now! The Podcast covered the topic on its YouTube channel as well.
College basketball fans reacted with support for Arnold and Paige Bueckers and criticism for Geno Auriemma.
"Geno has no reason to keep coaching. Paige's mother should also call him out for not developing his players and keeping the status quo. Narcissists like him need to be fired to be gone...he ain't leaving on his own," one fan wrote.
"Geno doesn't want Arnold to take Bueckers thunder ... Geno has been bad for Paige's entire career," another commented.
"Geno: “I am the destroyer of worlds.” Don’t you wonder how many players he’s ruined?" a fan said.
Here are a few more comments:
"When Auriemma pulled Arnold out, it was like something Christie Sides would do. Geno is like a horse trainer who will break the spirit of a thoroughbred racehorse ... He tries to hammer players into his mold,"
"The way Geno has essentially disrespected Paige. Every time he is interviewed during a game, he has nothing but shit to talk about his players," a fan commented.
"Kk is an elite point guard who started as a freshman on a team that went to the final four, and she is on the bench for K Chen, who looks like a deer in headlights," one more chimed in.
Geno Auriemma responds to his decision to bench KK Arnold
After the loss to USC at home, UConn coach Geno Auriemma addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to limit KK Arnold's minutes in the fourth quarter.
"One of [KK's] biggest roles should be to come in and disrupt the game and change the way the game is played. And I thought she did that," Geno Auriemma said.
Arnold played 14 minutes in the game scoring five points, with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 30.3 minutes per game last season as a freshman but has seen her playing time decrease through the first 12 games this season at 20.8 minutes on average. With that, her overall stat line has also gone down compared to last season.
