Paige Bueckers and the UConn women's basketball team saw Sarah Strong get honored with the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase MVP award after beating Iowa State in dominant fashion on Dec. 17. This prompted a quick reaction from Bueckers on social media.
The Cyclones had no answer for what Strong displayed on the court. She finished with 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to lead No. 4 UConn to a 101-68 blowout victory.
Strong won the aforementioned award thanks to her performance, which garnered a seal of approval from her co-star and teammate.
"Super thumbs up," Bueckers said.
Paige Bueckers is becoming more process-focused with winning mentality
Having the chance to compete for a national championship with the UConn Huskies will always be a priority for Paige Bueckers, especially as she progresses through the final year of her collegiate career. However, she has taken an approach that emphasizes patience and taking each game one at a time.
“It’s just about becoming more process-focused. Before, I was results-focused, super driven to win the national title. But now it’s more like I’m super driven to win every single day. If we don’t win every day, if we don’t build the great habits, if we don’t conquer every day in front of us, then we won’t get to the end goal we all want to get to," Bueckers said to The Athletic.
Her focus and leadership has allowed the No. 4 Huskies to have a 10-1 record after 11 games so far. They average 81 points on 51.6% shooting from the field and 36.9% from beyond the arc. On defense, they limit opponents to 53.4 points on 36% shooting overall and 32.4% from downtown.
Bueckers leads the way with numbers of 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game on shooting splits of 58.4% overall and 44.2% from three. Sarah Strong comes next with 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per contest on 56% shooting from the field and 36.5% from three-point land.
Paige Bueckers and No. 4 UConn prepare for a heavyweight matchup against No. 7 USC at the XL Center on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. ET.
