College basketball superstars Paige Bueckers and Flau'jae Johnson will be competing against each other for the NCAA championship in the upcoming season. However, before that, the two will lead their teams as coaches during the Overtime Select tournament's special Takeover Weekend.
On Aug. 16, Team Flau'jae and Team Paige will face off in OTE's Next Up 5s event, which aims to throw the spotlight on the best high school basketball talent and college freshmen. Overtime announced the news on Tuesday via its Instagram, adding that GG Banks and Oliviyah Edwards are some of the new talents making their debut in the games.
The matchup will tipoff at 7 p.m. EDT at Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Last year, Paige Bueckers managed to take a win, despite MiLaysia Fulwiley's last-ditch efforts to take the lead. The announcement also included special additions to the coaching staff, with JuJu Watkins, Cam Wilder and Jada Williams who could step in as assistant coaches if needed.
GG Banks is the No. 5 recruit in the 2027 recruiting class who is showing great promise of talent. The incoming sophomore has already drawn the attention of major schools and has received multiple offers.
Oliviyah Edwards, the No. 7 recruit in the 2026 class, is a star in the making who averaged 13 points and seven rebounds, making 60% of her shots during Overtime Select games last week. Out of her offers, she downsized the list to the top 10, and it includes LSU, South Carolina, USC and others.
Paige Bueckers and Flau'jae Johnson are predicted to be the face of college basketball in 2024-25
Last year, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese took the lead in representing the league, bringing in more numbers. With both the players now in the WNBA, Flau'jae Johnson and Paige Bueckers are expected to take over and be the new faces of women's college basketball in the 2024-25 season.
It was also rumored that the two would feature in the second edition of ESPN's "Full Court Press" docuseries. The first season narrated the stories of Clark, South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso and UCLA's Kiki Rice.
However, in an interview with the press before the Final Four game against Iowa, Paige Bueckers said that she is more focused on sharing the spotlight with her peers.
"I think media coverage is important for the game," Bueckers said. "I know freshman year I was like the media darling. ... But I think it's more important for the game to share the spotlight to grow the game and show all the stars of college basketball and not just focus on one particular player, whether it be me, Caitlin, JuJu, Angel.
"There's so many names in college basketball now that are huge, that are stars that deserve credit. So I honestly hope next year I'm not the focal point and the only person that gets attention. And I hope, as media, as players we can spread the love a little bit more."
