LSU coach Kim Mulkey hailed junior guard Kailyn Gilbert for bringing the additional offensive firepower and willingness to learn on the defensive end. Gilbert came off the bench to score 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line in 17 minutes to provide the bench spark for the Tigers in their 73-63 win over Auburn on Sunday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
During the postgame press conference, the veteran coach hailed the Arizona transfer for delivering the instant offense when the team's starters were having an off night.
"She has really been a spark for our team since we started this year," Mulkey said (8:12).
She even hurled some choice words at people who didn't give Gilbert a chance in her two-year stint with Arizona.
"I find in a lot in life people are a bunch of liars, that kid wants to win," the coach said (8:41). "That kid owned what she needed to work on. She's really maybe a few occasions here and there gets lost, but she hasn't been a liability on the defensive end."
She even lauded the program for being unselfish, with the team working together to help Gilbert improve her defense and limit her turnovers.
The four-time champion coach shared a quote that best describes the team, helping the Arizona transfer find her way and become an effective contributor for the Lady Tigers, who are still unbeaten in 17 games in the 2024-25 women's college basketball season.
"I'm going to share something that I really believe is so important," Mulkey said (7:47). "When you have multiple kids that are good and I've been blessed to do that and the quote goes like this: 'It's amazing what can be accomplished when no one cares who receives the credit.' So if those kids that are her teammates are not happy for her, then you're selfish."
The team has helped her work on her defense, and the coaching staff and the players also shared with Kailyn Gilbert some additional knowledge on how to take care of the ball and minimize her turnovers during the game.
