Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers were rivals for three years in college basketball. But they were teammates for a long time while playing for the USA junior national teams.
On Monday, an X user shared a throwback image of Clark and Bueckers from their high school days.
"Im sorry I still laugh thinking about those other countries thinking they had a chance then these girls showed up," the user captioned the post.
The snapshot shows the duo along with their other teammates — from right: Fran Belibi, Aliyah Boston and Azzi Fudd — gathering in a locker room. It is from the year 2017 when all five were included on the Team USA Under-16 roster that competed in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina.
The U.S. had a comfortable run in the competition, defeating every opponent with huge margins. The Americans thrashed Columbia 91-33 in their opening game and won the championship after defeating Canada 91-46 in the final. Aliyah Boston was named the tournament's MVP, as she averaged 11.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
In 2017, Paige Bueckers had just started high school at Hopkins High in Minnesota. She averaged 20.8 points, 4.5 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists, and was named Star Tribune All-Metro first team in her first year.
On the other hand, Caitlin Clark, aged 15 at that time, attended Dowling Catholic High in West Des Moines. Clark also had a decent freshman season, averaging 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers interact during WNBA All-Star Game
Former Iowa star Caitlin Clark and UConn's Paige Bueckers have known each other for a long time. Starting from AAU tournaments to Team USA practices, from being teammates to rivals, the duo goes way back. There was a moment when Clark almost joined Bueckers at UConn, but she ended up committing to Iowa instead.
Despite competing fiercely in college basketball, Clark and Bueckers have maintained a strong friendship. Most recently, fans got to witness their reunion during the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday at Footprint Center.
Clark, representing Team WNBA, walked over to Bueckers, who was sitting courtside. They interacted briefly, shared a hug and then Clark returned to the game, giving fans what they wanted. The 6-foot Indiana Fever guard stole the show, providing 10 assists and setting a new rookie record for the highest assists in an All-Star Game.
