Dawn Staley, the coach of a winning basketball program and also the representative of the U.S. selection committee, praised former Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark. Staley told the NBA's Mike Tirico that she could be a part of Team USA if they considered making their picks.
She said that Clark, despite being a rookie, was playing better than ever. She also waxed lyrical about her former student-athlete A'ja Wilson.
Dawn Staley wore a visor from Nike that featured her special logo, an "A" that has a tiny star attached to the left side of the alphabet. Wilson, after seeing what her former coach wore to the interview, reacted:
Dawn Staley extended her support to A'ja Wilson for the 2024 Paris Olympics
The three-time NCAAW championship-winning coach has always shown support for her former and current players. She often dedicates tweets and posts to A'ja Wilson. Before her 2024 Paris Olympics debut, the South Carolina Gamecocks coach extended her support to X.
During the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday, she shared a series of pictures of the Aces star with a fellow basketball player, Steph Curry. Staley wrote:
" @_ajawilson22 on that A’ONE ish! Love you A! Keep sitting on top of the world!!"
Dawn Staley also showed her excitement when Nike announced that she would have her own signature shoe line. She said:
"Well, y'all just finding out that she has a shoe," Staley said Saturday. "It's called the A1 because she's A1. It's not only a shoe, it's a clothing line. A'ja gonna do it big. And sometimes, when you do it big, it takes a little bit longer than we want. So let the best work at what they do so they can produce something super special. A1, we out."
Wilson is one of the star athletes like Serena Willians, Naomi Osaka and Megan Rapinoe who used her talents and influence to further herself in her career.
