Hailing from Minnesota, the Huskies guard competed for the Best Comeback Athlete award against Simone Biles, Joe Flacco and Zion Williamson.

Bueckers lost to the Olympian – Biles. However, her story of grit and determination to return to the court after losing the whole season to injury is one of inspiration.

Stylish Paige Bueckers calls for social justice

The UConn star, who appeared at the 2024 ESPYs in a lilac KidSuper suit, has won hearts and respect with her commitment to social justice. Bueckers used her platform to shine a light on the often-overlooked contributions of Black female athletes.

Ahead of the event, she described her fashion style to Highsnobiety as feminine and masculine, flaunting her unique flair.

Bueckers, who once made headlines at the 2021 ESPYs for advocating for female Black athletes, reiterated her stance in her latest interview.

“They don’t get the media coverage that they deserve. They’ve given so much to the sport, the community, and society as a whole, and their value is undeniable,” she said.

Her powerful words stem the disparity in attention and recognition between Black and white female athletes in sports. She restressed the importance of using high-profile events to address significant issues.

“The ESPYS felt like the perfect opportunity to speak up because a great number of people were watching and following that event,” she explained.

Produced by ESPN since 1993, the ESPY Awards celebrate individual and team athletic achievements and sports-related performances in a given year.
