No. 5 LSU coach Kim Mulkey started Christmas early with her outfit at the Tigers' clash against an unranked Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday. The Tigers rolled 85-57 over Louisiana, with transfer forward Jersey Wolfenbarger scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds in her first start this season.
However, Mulkey drew a lot of eyes with her ensemble outfit. The LSU boss posted a photo of herself walking along the sidelines on her Instagram story.
Mulkey is one of the most celebrated coaches in college women's basketball. With national championship titles in her portfolio, Mulkey is the only person to have won a national title as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
She is also one of the seven coaches to lead their teams to more than one tournament win, ranking third behind UConn's Geno Auriemma's 11 titles and former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt's eight.
Kim Mulkey absent from LSU vs LA-Lafayette postgame conference
Kim Mulkey was absent during the postgame conference following LSU's blowout win against Louisiana on Sunday. However, the team's spokesperson explained why the coach was nowhere to be seen after the game.
"Kim Mulkey was under the weather after the game, so Bob Starkey's going to fill in," the spokesperson explained.
LSU continued its undefeated run with double figures from Wolfenbarger (18 points and 15 rebounds), senior Aneesah Morrow (15 points and 15 rebounds), Mikaylah Williams (12 points) and Flau’Jae Johnson (11 points). Reserve guard Kailyn Gilbert was also on the scoresheet with 14 points.
Despite a commanding start, LSU faltered midway, allowing Louisiana to close 20-13 in the second quarter. The Tigers also committed 17 turnovers at halftime and 21 in the game.
"I thought we were desperately in need of a spark today," Starkey said. "We were, as a staff, disappointed with the way our team played today. We've been imploring them to start games quicker. We tend to start slow.
"So, in the first half, I thought we did a nice job of defending them, but we were just atrocious offensively — 17 turnovers ... it was just very sloppy. We're disappointed our fans had to watch that. Then, we clean up the turnovers a little bit, but we can't guard, and we can't keep them in front of us. So, we just didn't have a very good performance."
However, Sunday's win means LSU maintained a perfect 12-0 record this season. The Tigers will next face Seton Hall on Tuesday in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, Connecticut.
