Kim Mulkey and LSU overcome Vanderbilt in challenging SEC contest

Kim Mulkey and her undefeated No. 5 LSU team faced a surprising challenge from SEC rivals Vanderbilt on Monday. The veteran coach described the game as "weird," highlighting the unusual dynamics in their 83-77 victory.

Although the score made the game seem closer than it was, LSU dominated the boards, out-rebounding Vanderbilt by 20. However, Vanderbilt stayed in contention with efficient shooting beyond the arc and the free-throw line.

"We put them at the foul line in the second quarter," Kim Mulkey said. "We got four of them with two fouls (early on), so the second quarter was kind of weird."

Fouls were a major issue for LSU, with seven players accruing multiple fouls. Vanderbilt capitalized, converting 18 of 22 free throws, taking advantage of LSU’s errors during what Mulkey described as one of their weaker performances this season.

"(Vanderbilt) took the charges and did what they needed to do," Mulkey said. "I thought they made shots, I thought they made contested shots. I thought we got fatigued some defensively and I thought we were on an island by themselves."

Star forward Aneesah Morrow was a key player for LSU, playing the entire game and contributing 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting, along with 15 rebounds. Flau'jae Johnson, the team’s leading scorer, finished with 25 points, shooting 10-of-21, while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Mikaylah Williams had one of her strongest scoring performances of the season, adding 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting in 32 minutes on the court. When asked about her decision to keep key players on the floor for extended minutes, Mulkey was clear:

"We’re playing to win. I’m not worried about 10 games down the road. We’re in a dogfight out there."
