Paige Bueckers turned 23 on Sunday, and Flau'jae Johnson was one of the many stars who greeted the UConn guard. The LSU Tigers junior shared on Instagram a photo of Bueckers and herself from the time they coached their respective teams for the Overtime Select's Takeover event in August.
"Happy Birthday To My Dawg," Johnson wrote on the IG story.
Bueckers and Johnson hit it off during the WNBA All-Star Weekend in July. The guards were seen cheering the players from the sidelines. In August, Bueckers joined as a guest on Johnson's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast.
Paige Bueckers and Flau'jae Johnson predict their potential tipoff
With Paige Bueckers playing for the Big East Conference and Johnson in the Southeastern Conference, the chances of the two meeting on the court are rare in the regular season. However, UConn and LSU could have a matchup in the March Madness.
On Johnson's podcast in August, Bueckers shared that a potential game between the two teams would be exciting.
"I think it would be very entertaining like both sides," Bueckers said. "I love Mikaylah Williams' game. I love her game. ... I think it'll be yeah entertaining. I'm sure the headlines would probably be me versus you but a whole lot of talent on the floor."
Bueckers is in her final college season with the UConn Huskies and this will be her last chance to lead her team to a NCAA championship win. While she has the required pieces, the roster lacks experience, as Bueckers and Princeton transfer Kaitlyn Chen are the only active upperclassmen.
Azzi Fudd, Aubrey Griffin and Caroline Ducharme are yet to get the green signal for return after being sidelined with injuries last season. With a sophomore and freshman-heavy roster, Paige Bueckers must embark on a journey to bring back the title and end UConn's nine-year championship drought.
Meanwhile, Flau'jae Johnson will lead the LSU Tigers with the help of Aneesah Morrow after Angel Reese left for the WNBA. The junior guard seems ready for her new role and has already shared that she could leave college early if she wins a championship next season.
