Ava Jones got a heartfelt message from her Iowa teammate Jada Gyamfi on retirement from college basketball. Jones released a statement saying she is stepping away from the court for medical reasons. She joined the Hawkeyes before the 2023-24 season but couldn't play due to a road accident.

In a statement issued through Instagram, Jones expressed her gratitude to the Iowa women's basketball program for being a part of it last season. She also expressed sadness about her medical retirement and said that her coaches, trainers and teammates have been amazing to her since the accident.

“I’d like to thank my family for the never ending support and I’m excited about the next chapter of my life,” a part of the statement read.

Jones' statement prompted many messages of support for her on social media. One such message came from the Hawkeyes star Jada Gyamfi.

“Proud of you Ava,” Gyamfi wrote.

While Ava Jones would not be a part of the Hawkeyes women's basketball program anymore, she would remain a student of the University of Iowa on a scholarship. She also affirmed that she would always remain a Hawkeye.

Jones was a standout high school basketball star and had committed to Iowa in 2022. Just days after the commitment, she was involved in an accident when a driver ran off the road and hit her and her parents, who were walking on the sidewalk in Louisville, Kentucky. While she was seriously injured, her father, Trey Jones, died.

Jada Gyamfi’s special message for ex-teammate Gabbie Marshall

Jada Gyamfi pens special notes for her friends every occasion, letting them know how much they are valued. Last month, she had something special to say about another ex-teammate, Gabbie Marshall.

"The only person I'd pause the aux for.”

Gabbie retired from basketball at the end of the 2023-24 season to focus on graduating.

Gyamfi will return for another season with the Iowa basketball program in the upcoming term. She will be hoping to lift the national title after missing out on two straight occasions.
