Patrick McCaffery is taking shots at Caitlin Clark's critics as the Indiana Fever rookie wrapped a historic regular season this week. Patrick is the brother of Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, and he has always been vocal in support of the star guard.
On Friday, Patrick McCaffery shared a post detailing Caitlin Clark's achievements in her rookie season.
"'Reality is coming' 😭😭😭," he wrote.
Patrick's message was a call back to Diana Taurasi's comments about Clark's entry into the WNBA. During an interview with SportsCenter’s Scott Van Pelt on April 6 (during the Women's NCAA Tournament Final Four), the Phoenix Mercury veteran said:
“Look, SVP, reality is coming. There’s levels to this thing. And that’s just life. ... You look superhuman playing against 18-year-olds, but you’re going to (be playing against) some grown women that have been playing professional basketball for a long time.”
Caitlin Clark proved all her doubters wrong as she broke record after record in the five months of the regular season. She is now preparing to lead the Indiana Fever on their first trip to the playoffs since 2016, with the first game against Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
Van Pelt also took his stand with Clark as he said on his show (via Sports Illustrated):
"Speaking of legends, speaking of Connecticut, I think Diana Taurasi had it wrong. I think she was the reality. I think Caitlin, they should call her 'The Reality' because she was coming, and she's here in this league. She has been great."
Geno Auriemma caught in crossfire after downplaying Caitlin Clark
With Caitlin Clark slowly making her naysayers eat their words, the latest basketball personality caught in the crossfire was UConn coach, Geno Auriemma. During an interview on "The Dan Patrick Show" in June, Auriemma called Clark's fanbase delusion for thinking she would immediately make an impact in the WNBA.
The UConn coach also added that the Fever rookie was not built for the physicality of the league and said that her fans were being disrespectful to the players in the league for betting on her winning the MVP.
Fox Sports' Nick Wright called out the coach for his take:
“Geno, just say you’re a UConn guy and you thought this was gonna be Paige, and instead it's Caitlin,” Wright said. (From 1:05)
