LSU Tigers (21-1, 6-1 SEC) coach Kim Mulkey was able to bring her team back to the win column after succumbing to the South Carolina Gamecocks (19-1, 7-0 SEC) on Friday. The 2023 national champions edged out the Texas A&M Aggies (10-9, 3-4 SEC) on Sunday, Jan. 26, by 13 points, 64-51, to mark their 21st victory of the 2024-2025 season much to the delight of Mulkey.
During the post-game press conference, the 62-year-old talked about how her fifth-ranked team pulled through their busy schedule and won by double digits against a conference opponent to stay within touching distance of the top spot in the SEC.
"You just grind, how many times through the course of a season. You got to grind. We're seven, eight games in, you're about halfway there. There's going to be games like this. This isn't going to be the only one. I'm glad we were home; thought it was a great crowd today, alumni day. Just grind it out," Mulkey shared. (8:06)
She then went on to discuss the rapid turnaround for the Tigers, who lost to their conference rival and defending national champions in the previous game before returning to their homefloor on Sunday. Mulkey also discussed the adjustments she made against the Aggies following the loss against the Gamecocks.
"If you noticed, I started subbing a lot early today; that wasn't just because of foul trouble. I was subbing early because in the South Carolina game, I thought we were short on our shots. So, I'm thinking, 'Okay, let's rest them if we can in the first and second quarter, and see if that helps, see if we can get more production from our bench while they're fresh," Mulkey said. (9:55)
"So, we're going to have games coming quickly. I'm glad we don't play until Thursday," she concluded.
More adjustments are slated to come in the LSU gameplan as they set their sights on hosting the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday, Jan. 30, on their homefloor with the hopes of staying in the win column.
Kim Mulkey says rebounding and defense wins LSU games
When Kim Mulkey was asked about the significant turnover difference between the LSU Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies, she asserted that it works hand-in-hand with rebounding.
One way or another, the tenured tactician said that her team needs both simultaneously to achieve success.
"30 offensive boards, 21 turnovers; that's rebounding and that's defense. When it's tough for you on the offensive end, that's what keeps you and helps you win ball games. I've preached that since I've been here, but this is a great example of it today," Mulkey said. (11:27)
LSU had 52 total rebounds, 30 offensive and 22 defensive, against Texas A&M's 33 total, 15 offensive and 18 defensive, along with winning the turnover battle, 21-12. If Mulkey's squad seeks to maintain their top standing in the conference and beyond, they will need to continue being a force on defense and on the glass.
