The college basketball world is mourning the death of broadcasting legend Greg Gumbel, who died at the age of 78. The family of the beloved CBS Sports anchor and commentator confirmed the news in a statement on Friday.

Gumbel rose to prominence during his time at CBS Sports, joining the famed TV network in 1989. He became the host of "NFL Today" in 1990 and held that position until 1993. He also served as that program's host from 2004 to 2005. Among the big NFL games he handled with CBS Sports were the Super Bowls in 1992, 2013 and 2016.

Gumbel also connected with college basketball fans when he became the host and play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports' NCAA games. He called regular-season contests in the NCAA as well as March Madness games.

College hoops fans took to Instagram to pay tribute to Gumbel following his death.

Greg Gumbel's famed broadcasting career ends after battle with cancer

College hoops fans first learned about Greg Gumbel's health issues back in March when he missed his first NCAA Tournament in 27 years. Gumbel rejoined CBS from NBC in 1998 and had been the studio host for the network's March Madness coverage since then.
