Dan Hurley shares his thoughts on the new UConn roster
The UConn Huskies lost four players to the NBA draft in June and all of them were part of the regular starting five. With Alex Karaban returning as the only starter, Dan Hurley has had to make a few additions to the roster.
Aidan Mahaney and Tarris Reed Jr. are the two transfer portal additions. Meanwhile, Ahmad Nowell, Isaiah Abraham and Liam McNeeley joined from the 2024 recruiting class.
With these changes to the team, Dan Hurley was asked about his plans during his appearance on College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein in June.
"We’re just trying to find the best way to play with this group, which I think is a talented group," Hurley said. "It’s maybe a little bit of a deeper team in terms of the desire to maybe play nine or 10 players as opposed to it probably being an eight-man rotation in the past two years.
"I didn’t think we were very good last summer or the summer before. We probably didn’t think we had a really good team until the end of February or beginning of March during this past year. As a coach, you’re just always insecure about your team until late in the season."
If Dan Hurley wins the 2025 NCAA championship, he would be the first coach since John Wooden of the UCLA Bruins to lead a team to a three-peat. While he is one of the favorites to do so, the Huskies are set to face heavy competition from Alabama and Kansas, who have both stacked their rosters with top talents.
