Freshman UConn forward Sarah Strong is enjoying an unblemished 6-0 start to her collegiate career as the Huskies defeated Ole Miss 73-60 on Wednesday to take home the 2024 Baha Mar Women's Championship. Strong was steady for her team, notching 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two stocks (steals + blocks) in 36 minutes of action.
Strong went 5-for-12 from the field for a 41.2% shooting clip but was not able to hit on any of her 3-point attempts, going 0-for-5 from downtown. She was the team's third-leading scorer as fifth-year star Paige Bueckers popped for 29 while Azzi Fudd dropped 18 off the bench.
The first-year standout opened the game with a block right away that eventually led to a Kaitlyn Chen lay-in to give the Huskies their first edge, 2-0. As Strong continued to be a presence down low, altering shots and boxing out for rebounds, she would score on a five-footer at the 6:44 mark, 6-2.
Her next basket would come from a powerful move to the basket where Strong showcased impeccable footwork for an 18-year-old. She eventually faked her defender out for a floater off the glass, 10-2.
She was then on the receiving end of a Paige Bueckers feed for a layup to give UConn a double-digit lead, 14-3, early in the game. Looking like a well-oiled machine, the Huskies ultimately ended the first quarter ahead, 19-8.
The stalwart's interior positioning provided her with another close shot, 25-13, that was assisted by KK Arnold. Strong stayed consistent with her rebounding and defense as her next make in the 3:33 mark of the second period got her to double digits, 33-13. The Huskies then ended the first half up by 21 points, 37-18.
Despite not scoring for the rest of the game, Strong's tenacity on defense and her ability to box out and catch rebounds was a huge boost for UConn to come away with the 73-60 victory over the Rebels.
Sarah Strong wins third straight Big East Player of the Week award
For her first season as a Huskie, Strong is averaging all-around numbers of 15.4 points, eight boards, 4.2 assists, 3.2 steals, and 2 blocks a game. Her defense, both on the perimeter and inside, has been her biggest contribution to the 6-0 UConn as she looks to improve on her offense even with her respectable production on that side.
On Monday, Strong was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.
That came after a stellar performance against Farleigh Dickinson on Nov. 20, which is her best game thus far. She scored a season-high 20 points with eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
