Kim Mulkey reflects on LSU’s loss to South Carolina

After the No. 5-ranked LSU’s much-anticipated matchup against No. 2-ranked South Carolina on Friday, coach Kim Mulkey reflected on the game. She pointed to critical moments that shaped the outcome.

The Tigers fell short in a hard-fought battle, with turnovers at key points proving to be a significant factor.

“Turnovers at the wrong time,” Mulkey said. “We had critical turnovers, maybe a couple of them were back-to-back, but I thought the momentum shifted there when we had those. We’ve got to mature and grow up and be prepared for it.”

LSU’s inability to capitalize in crucial moments was a recurring theme, underscoring the need for the Tigers to refine its decision-making under pressure. Both LSU and South Carolina brought their defensive strengths to the forefront in what Mulkey described as a tightly contested, low-scoring game.

“I thought our defense and South Carolina's defense was good,” Mulkey said. “It was a low-scoring game for both teams. They scouted each other pretty darn good, and it wasn’t an entertaining game from an offensive standpoint, but I didn’t think it was a boring game. I thought it was a very good game.”

South Carolina, known for its relentless intensity and disciplined execution, did not deviate from its usual style of play. Mulkey noted that the Gamecocks stuck to their strengths, much like LSU.

“We just played our man-to-man like we always do,” Mulkey said. “We didn’t double anybody. I didn’t notice that South Carolina did anything different, just two teams that are very talented going at it.”

For Mulkey and her Tigers, this loss served as a learning experience in their journey through the season. The loss was LSU’s 17th straight defeat to South Carolina and the fifth in a row since Mulkey joined the Tigers in 2021.
