Diana Taurasi and Paige Bueckers met during the WNBA All-Star game on Saturday. The Phoenix Mercury guard was part of Team USA, which took on and lost 117-109 to Team WNBA. Meanwhile, Bueckers was a spectator who cheered the players from her courtside seat.
Before the game tipped off, the former and current UConn Huskies players were videoed hugging and chatting. The moment went viral on social media with fans commenting on the similarities between the players, as they both wore slicked-back buns.
Some fans also commented on Bueckers' outfit choice which included a jean puffer jacket, jorts, and a red top. One fan wrote:
"She's like Basketball Billie Eillish"
Here are a few more reactions:
Diana Taurasi played four years with the Huskies, winning three championships. Paige Bueckers is entering her fifth year at UConn and is yet to win a title. She has led the team to three Final Four appearances and four Big East championship titles.
Paige Bueckers is preparing for her final college season
The 2024-25 season offers Paige Bueckers a final chance at winning the NCAA title. After leading an injury-ridden roster to the Final Four last season, the guard is in a much more comfortable spot to achieve the best results in the upcoming season.
“There’s a much larger sense of urgency,” Bueckers said (via The Athletic). “This is my last year to get what I came here for, which is a national championship. … No more ‘Passive Paige.’”
Coach Geno Auriemma has made some changes to the roster by bringing in Kaitlyn Chen and adding three freshman players, including No. 1 recruit Sarah Strong. At the time, Paige is also making strides in her training so she can avoid previous years' mishaps when she suffered injuries mid-season.
“I haven't had a lot of time this whole college career to work on my skills and get better during the offseason, work on my weaknesses and get better at my strengths,” she said (via UConn WBB Weekly) “It’s been just a learning process.
"I never really had this sort of frame and muscle strength to use my body in that way. I was always more agile and playing sort of wavy. Now I feel like I could play with more force and just use my strength on both sides of the ball. Play more physically. It's been a learning process and I'm still learning, but yeah, it's gotten better.”
