"Similar to what WNBA players did to Caitlin Clark": When Iowa's Jada Gyamfi likened former teammate's situation to a soft toy named "Auntie Caitlin"

Caitlin Clark's former Iowa teammates are some of her biggest defenders and aren't afraid to call people out on her behalf. During a TikTok live session from June, Hawkeyes' Jada Gyamfi and former guard Gabbie Marshall were talking about Gyamfi's dog, Luna, and her toy named after Clark.

Gyamfi asked Luna to bring her "Auntie Caitlin" toy and explained to fans the reason why its arm was slightly ripped off.

"This is what she did to Auntie Caitlin. Similar to what the other players in the WNBA do to Caitlin," Gyamfi said. "So she ripped her arm off, ripped her jersey and ripped her tail off."
"And then like, honestly, what they did is like. So, Auntie Caitlin was going to get the ball and bounce, and then ... Luna just like pushed her over for no reason. And then she went on Twitter and acted like it was not a big deal."

Jada Gyamfi was referring to the Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game on June 2 when Chennedy Carter hip-checked Caitlin Clark. Although Carter was initially whistled only for a foul away from the ball, the WNBA later reviewed it and upgraded it to a flagrant 1.

This incident set off an intense debate about the extreme physicality in the WNBA. Many fans, analysts, and former NBA players like Charles Barkley called it a case of specific targeting and jealousy toward the Fever rookie from opponents.

Caitlin Clark's foul trouble has not reduced as there have been instances where unwanted contact has gone uncalled in recent games. Clark has already accumulated six technical foul calls and another one will lead to a one-game suspension. With playoffs around the corner, the Fever cannot risk losing their core player.

Caitlin Clark's record-breaking season in the WNBA continues

Caitlin Clark is proving all her naysayers wrong with a historic rookie season in the WNBA. Coming into the rookie season, there were many doubts about her adaptability to the professional league. However, the Fever guard has displayed exceptional skills and has even broken some seconds along the way.

On Sunday, during the game against the Dallas Wings, Caitlin Clark broke the rookie scoring record with 746 points (and counting). The previous record was set by Seimone Augustus (744) in 2006. Clark scored a career-high 35 points with eight assists in the 110-109 win.

“I got my picture with her on my dad’s little phone – it was maybe like a BlackBerry back in the day,” Clark said, paying tribute to Augustus (per The Guardian). “I vividly remember it. I was always a fan of her game and the way she could shoot the ball.”

She previously also set the WNBA single-season rookie record for three-pointers and assists. Clark is the first WNBA rookie to record two triple-doubles and the first to record a triple-double in Fever history. With the regular season almost wrapped up, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are preparing for their first playoff stint since 2016.
