Caitlin Clark, Gabbie Marshall, and Kate Martin made the trip back to the Carver-Hawkeyes Arena, surprising Jan Jensen and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The trio played a huge role in the NCAA championship games in the last two seasons and were present for the Hawkeyes' practice sessions as they prepared for the 2024-25 season.
The Iowa WBB posted a snippet from practice on Instagram on Friday and coach Jensen shared the video on her story, adding:
"🐐sightings today!🙌🏻😊 So fun having Caitlin, Kate & Gabbie "home"!"
Jan Jensen took over after Lisa Bluder retired in May. She followed Bluder from Drake and was the assistant coach for 24 years. Jensen played a huge role in the recruitment of Caitlin Clark and was integral in the Indiana guard's growth as a sharpshooter.
Jan Jensen discusses the aspect of Caitlin Clark's game Iowa will miss most
After four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Caitlin Clark transitioned to the WNBA and was picked No. 1 by the Indiana Fever. The guard played a crucial role in Iowa's exploits in the NCAA Tournament since her sophomore year and is leaving behind a huge void in the team.
During the Big Ten Media Day, Jan Jensen was asked to name what Iowa will miss most without its star guard.
"Caitlin was indeed a unique talent, coach Jensen said. "Losing a seasoned class creates a gap, especially when experience in this sport is irreplaceable. No matter how talented the incoming freshmen are, there are no shortcuts to building expertise in high-pressure situations, as we all know from our own career experiences.
"Collectively, we'll miss her presence and contributions, but we must remain focused on the value of developing new players who have the potential to grow immensely, just as Caitlin and others did during their time here."
While Clark took care of the offense, Kate Martin played an important role as a leader. She was nicknamed 'The Glue' and was responsible for running the team on court and assisting Caitlin. Gabbie Marshal was a 3&D specialist who worked in tandem with the other two guards.
With all three graduated from the team, the Iowa Hawkeyes have a tough road ahead of them. While they have added pieces like Lucy Olsen to offset the loss, it is yet to be seen how effective these moves will be.
The Hawkeyes will begin their 2024-25 season on Nov. 4 against Northern Illinois.
